Biomechanics

Our biomechanics activity is entirely focused on the bone ingrowths’ processes. In this context, we develop computational models for designing implants.

Challenges

The optimisation of prosthesis design requires not only a good mechanical design of the implant, but also a good understanding of its influence on the surrounding bone. As a result, models are developed for the mechanical behaviour of bone and to predict the bone remodelling (growth and absorption) as a result of mechanical stimuli. Using these models it will be possible to optimise prosthesis design for in-growth of bone and long-term fixation.

Although this is a small activity, it is very well embedded in a tight collaboration with the academic medical centres of Leiden (LUMC) and Rotterdam (EUR) and the bio-oriented groups at TU Delft.
