Biomechanics
Our biomechanics activity is entirely focused on the bone ingrowths’ processes. In this context, we develop computational models for designing implants.
ChallengesThe optimisation of prosthesis design requires not only a good mechanical design of the implant, but also a good understanding of its influence on the surrounding bone. As a result, models are developed for the mechanical behaviour of bone and to predict the bone remodelling (growth and absorption) as a result of mechanical stimuli. Using these models it will be possible to optimise prosthesis design for in-growth of bone and long-term fixation. Although this is a small activity, it is very well embedded in a tight collaboration with the academic medical centres of Leiden (LUMC) and Rotterdam (EUR) and the bio-oriented groups at TU Delft.
